Small Excavator Overview
Small excavators typically refer to fully hydraulic crawler excavators with an operating weight of 1–6 tons (the industry often extends the upper limit to 8 tons), distinguishing them from medium (6–30 tons) and large excavators. Those below 1 ton are often called ultra-micro excavators, 1–2 tons are micro excavators, 2–4 tons are mini excavators, and 4–6 tons are small excavators.
Typical Dimensions
The machine width mostly ranges from 1–2 meters, allowing access through residential gates and narrow alleys. The zero-tail or short-tail swing design minimizes the rear swing radius, making it suitable for confined spaces.
Bucket Capacity
0.04–0.3 m³, significantly smaller than medium-sized machines. Quick attachment changes enable the use of dozens of accessories such as buckets, breakers, grapples, augers, and more.
Core Structural Components of Small Excavators
1.Power System
Primarily diesel engines (meeting China IV / Euro V emission standards), with some electric versions available. Power ranges from approximately 10 kW (1-ton class) to 40 kW (6-ton class). Hydraulic pumps provide power for both operation and travel.
2.Working Attachment
Consists of the boom (often with offset capability), arm, and bucket, driven by hydraulic cylinders to perform digging, lifting, and dumping. The offset boom allows lateral operation without moving the machine, significantly improving efficiency in tight spaces.
3.Swing Mechanism
The upper structure can rotate 360°. In zero-tail models, the rear does not extend beyond the tracks, preventing collisions with walls.
4.Undercarriage
Most use rubber tracks (to protect surfaces), with some models featuring retractable tracks (narrowable for passing through tighter spaces). Wheeled small excavators exist but are far less common than crawler types.
5.Controls and Cab
